Over the past decades, world leaders, governments, and public health organizations have relentlessly pursued strategies to both prevent and counter the devastating impact of mosquito-borne diseases. However, the global burden continues to amplify, with mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya affecting hundreds of millions each year, and the World Health Organization estimates that more than 700,000 deaths annually are attributable to vector-borne diseases. Moreover, this rapid effect is disproportionate due to the all-consuming manner in which urbanization is spreading. On top of that, inadequate sanitation and overcrowding leave people even more vulnerable and exposed to illness, particularly those lacking the resources to protect themselves.
In India, and particularly in Delhi, the monsoon season elevates these risks. For underserved communities in urban slums, stagnant water, inadequate drainage systems, and limited access to healthcare, mosquito-borne diseases become recurring crises rather than seasonal challenges. Widespread awareness campaigns are doing little to instill knowledge, along with resources and tools, for these people to be equipped to defend themselves properly.
What does this mean for families whose health and livelihoods are repeatedly undermined by preventable infections?
This crevice is where Netting Hope steps in. Designed with empathy and practicality at the crux, the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between public health intent and community reality. Netting Hope begins with a listening ear, taking extensive surveys, and thereby garnering insights directly from slum residents about the risks and obstacles they face when it comes to the monsoons. Additionally, we aim to provide resources for immediate and sustainable protection against their challenges, ranging from sending out concrete tools such as mosquito nets and citronella sprays to user-friendly information in the form of clear, accessible flyers outlining “dos and don’ts” to reduce mosquito risks and fears.
Netting Hope enters the public health landscape to extend care and protection against mosquito-borne diseases to society’s most neglected communities, through a holistic cycle woven from listening, equipping, and empowering.
